A Brief History of the Jade Egg

Originating from Taoism, an ancient Chinese system of healing and spirituality, a Jade Egg practice has been used through the ages as a tool to cultivate and balance sexual energy. In the Taoist tradition, sexuality is understood as an integral part of health and wellness. Historically queens and royal women of the court used the jade egg practice as a way to enhance their health, vitality, and their sexual wellness long past their childbearing years. It has been used for centuries as a tool to cultivate sexual energy and when used correctly to increase the tone, resiliency, and overall health of the pelvic floor.

 Sterilize Before you Begin

You MUST sterilize your egg before using it for the first time.  Place the egg in a small pot and cover with water. Bring water just to a boil, remove from heat, and let stand for ten minutes.  Carefully remove the egg (it will be HOT), and dry with a clean cloth or towel. Let the egg cool to room temperature before using (because nobody wants burned lady parts).

Cleaning, Storage, and Safety

After the initial sterilization, rinsing your egg with clean water between uses will be sufficient. We recommend occasionally washing it with a gentle soap between uses, or re-sterilizing it from time to time. Since vaginas are notoriously sensitive, be sure to use a fragrance-free soap and to rinse the egg thoroughly. Verify that the hole is clear of secretions after each use. You can remove any secretions by blowing on one side of the hole, or by soaking your egg overnight in a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water. When not in use, wrap your egg in a clean, lint free cloth and store inside the provided pouch.

Getting Started

Make sure your egg is clean. Using unwaxed and unflavored dental floss, thread the egg through the hole for easy retrieval, like the string on a tampon. Go to thetulip.co for more detailed instructions on threading your egg.

  • Always insert the wider end of the egg first, so the smaller end with the hole is toward the opening of the vagina. Depending on the shape of your vagina you may feel tight around the egg, or you may feel nothing at all. This is entirely normal and ok either way!
  • If you have given birth vaginally, had an episiotomy, or torn during childbirth, you may find it difficult to keep the egg inside. For this, we recommend that you lay down or sit in a slightly upright position for the first few months of practicing until you gain the strength to keep it in while you're standing.

PLEASE BE AWARE

You may feel awkward during your first few times using your yoni egg. Maintaining a healthy sense of humor and gentleness with yourself when first starting out can make this experience more playful. We encourage you to make your yoni egg practice your own, by listening to your body and finding what feels good to you. Use our suggested exercises as helpful guidelines for getting started. Just as every woman and every body are unique, so should be your yoni egg practice. Some things to keep in mind as you practice:

  • Sneezing, coughing, or laughing may cause the egg to burst out of your vagina unexpectedly.
  • Retrieve your egg before using the toilet. You risk losing your egg in the toilet if you do not.
  • Stop using the egg immediately if you feel anxiety, discomfort, or pain at any time; especially if you are pregnant or have an IUD. It is important to respect your body rather than trying to practice “correctly.”
  • Do not use the egg during menstruation, or if you have a bladder, vagina, or vulva infection.
  • Intended for adult use only.

Locating your PC Muscle

Your PC muscle (a collection of smaller muscles in your pelvic region) surround and support all your pelvic organs. Learning how to contract and relax your PC muscle effectively increases blood flow to the entire pelvic bowl, improving your libido, natural lubrication, and the ease and intensity with which you can orgasm. Practicing vaginal squeezes is a helpful way to identify where your PC muscle is located in your vagina area before using your yoni egg for the first time.

Begin by standing or lying down. Gently insert two of your fingers into your vagina up to the second knuckle. Then try to squeeze your PC muscle (the same muscles you use to start and stop the stream of urine). You should feel a squeezing or contraction of your vaginal walls around your fingers. These are the muscles you will use in your yoni egg exercises.

 A word on tension:

What we are aiming for in every jade egg practice is the balance between flexing and relaxing your PC muscles. You must focus on both, and we recommend that at the end of every practice you should go into a deep squat for a minute or lay with your knees bent, feet touching, and legs open. These actions will balance out the exercises by helping to relax your muscles, which is just as necessary for a healthy and resilient pelvic floor and for experiencing pleasure.

Egg-cercises:

The following exercises are designed for complete beginners.  They are simple and effective, intended to help improve pelvic floor health and resiliency and to help tone your vagina walls.  Setting aside time to connect with yourself sensually will help you discover pleasure centers in your body that you may not have experienced before. But don’t take our word for it, try it for yourself and find out. We recommend setting aside a minimum of 15 minutes 3-4 days a week to reap the juicy benefits of a yoni egg practice.

It is imperative to note that learning to relax and release tension in your vagina and pelvic region is essential to your ability to experience pleasure and orgasm. What we are aiming for with a jade egg practice is NOT a tight vagina. Your focus should be tone, suppleness, and ability to relax deeply into your own sensations.

Make your practice unique to your needs:

Each person’s jade egg practice will be unique. This means some days you may want to focus on tone and resiliency of your pelvic floor, in which you would concentrate on doing some or all of the exercises below. Some days you may want to connect with your body differently; through meditation, breath work, or self-pleasuring. All of these ways of connecting with yourself are part of a jade egg practice, and each teaches us different things about ourselves. Trust your body, and listen to your own needs. Never force yourself into an exercise practice if you are not feeling it, instead try a simple meditation or swaying your hips while listening to your favorite song.

Cultivating a unique practice will ensure that as you develop and deepen your connection with your body, you become empowered by listening to your own needs and acting on those instead of what someone else is telling you. We highly recommend learning to use the microcosmic orbit as a way to move energy cultivated during your practice throughout your body. This will help energize and balance your whole system.

Warming Up Your Body

Set aside at least 15 minutes (even though you deserve way more), and find a private, comfortable, and safe place to practice without interruption. Start by waking up your body. Laying flat on your back, gently massage your body. Give yourself time to connect with your sensual self, massaging your breasts are a great place to start. Breathe deeply, focusing on your breath will deepen your practice and help you stay relaxed.

When you feel aroused, and your vagina is well lubricated, you are ready to insert the egg. If there is not enough natural lubrication, you can use a water based personal lubricant or, our favorite, extra virgin coconut oil. Place one hand over your heart and the other over the outside of your vagina. Take a few long, deep belly breaths to help your body relax. Before inserting the egg, warm it up by rubbing it between your palms. When you feel comfortable and ready, insert the egg following the directions below, and if desired, continue with an exercise of your choice.

Exercise 1:  Embracing the Egg - BEGINNER

The egg embrace is a technique used to gently bring the egg into your vagina without using forceful pressure from your fingers.

Holding the egg with the wide end touching the inside of your inner labia (the inner lip), gently move the egg in a circular motion over the opening of your vagina until you find a place that feels just right, and very gently insert only the tip. When you feel ready, on your next inhale, gently contract your PC muscle around the egg. When you exhale, release your PC squeeze. This creates a vacuum like an effect that will gently pull the egg into your vagina. Continue to inhale and squeeze, exhale and relax, applying light pressure with your finger to help your egg move slowly and fully into your vagina.

Do this exercise slowly, and don’t rush. Once your egg has fully entered your vagina, rest with it inside you and take a couple of long, deep breaths before beginning your next exercise.

Exercise 2: Upgraded Kegel - BEGINNER

With the egg already inside your vagina, start to engage your PC muscles by squeezing them the way you would stop a flow of urine. Inhale and pull the egg up and in by contracting the muscles this way. Notice if the sensation feels different from a kegel performed without an egg. Exhale and relax your PC muscles. Experiment with holding the PC contraction for different lengths of time, and varying amounts of pressure. Try pulsing, resting, then holding for ten seconds and releasing.

You may notice the weight of the Jade Egg allows you to feel how much your muscles are contracting during the kegel. If you don’t notice the egg, don’t be concerned. Many women experience little to no awareness of the egg at first. Part of the benefit of these exercises is the subtle awakening of sensation when you practice regularly. Over time, with practice, your sensitivity will significantly improve.

Exercise 3: The Inner Lift - INTERMEDIATE

Part 1: This exercise is about increasing your proprioception, your ability to feel what is happening in your body. It also helps to increase sensation throughout the entire vaginal canal and can help with muscle articulation and your ability to flex and relax your PC muscles.

Laying on your back with the egg inserted, locate the end of the string and hold it in your fingers. Pull the egg slightly down so that it is sitting near the opening of your vagina, make sure it doesn’t come all the way out. Hold the string, so it has some slack, focus your awareness on your vaginal canal. Squeeze the lower PC muscles (the ones nearest to your vaginal opening) to pull the egg slightly inward and upward. Breathe in, and with this breath imagine lifting the egg again this time to the middle of your vaginal canal. Exhale, and keep squeezing this time pulling the egg up as high as you can into your vagina. It may be hard to feel the egg as it moves, we use the string as a way to get feedback on how deep the egg is inside. If your string has more tension at all, then you can tell the egg has moved up and inside your vagina.

Part 2: The next part of this exercise is learning to lower the egg. This is a motion similar to pushing while giving birth. It may be an unfamiliar feeling for you, and if that is the case be patient with yourself and keep trying. These muscles take time to become familiar with, and with gentle regular practice, you will start to notice the subtle difference in sensation and ability to use muscles in isolated ways...

The purpose of part 2  is to push the egg downward while keeping your muscles squeezed around the egg. With the egg sitting as deep as you pulled it inside of your vagina, begin the opposite motion of pushing downward and outward, while still keeping your muscles engaged around the egg. You will start to feel if the egg is moving and if the string is becoming more slack. Once you feel the egg is nearing the opening of your vagina just repeat part 1, and part 2 for 5-7 minutes. You may also try this exercise with your hips lifted in the air, this helps to sensitize different parts of your vagina, and engage different muscles in your lower abdomen and glutes.

Exercise 4:  The Power Pull - INTERMEDIATE

This exercise helps heighten sensation by increasing blood flow and gently stimulating the nerves and tissues inside your vaginal canal. It can help increase your ability to experience deep pleasure from various types of touch, as well as increase your ability to feel pleasure in areas that may not be as sensitive to touch.

This exercise is laying on your back. It is a great follow up practice for exercise 3 “The Inner Lift.”

With the egg inserted deep into your vagina, hold the end of your string and tug slightly until there is a snug tension. Squeeze the entire length of your PC muscles; this means activating the lower, mid, and inner most muscles along the inside of your vaginal canal.

Once you are squeezing, start to pull the string until you feel the egg starting to move toward the vaginal opening.

The purpose of the exercise is to keep the egg inside of you while slowly increasing the amount you are pulling on the string. Once you find the sweet spot, hold and keep squeezing for 5 seconds, then relax for 5 seconds while taking a deep breath. Repeat this exercise for 3-5 minutes.

When you are in the relaxing part of the exercise, try to focus on relaxing your muscles just as much as you focus on squeezing them. It is just as important to have a relaxed vagina as it is to have a toned and resilient pelvic floor.

Try Sitting or Standing: Once you are comfortable with the egg, and have practiced lying down often enough to recognize your own level of comfort, you may try this practice while standing up. Being upright will use gravity to bring the egg down. You can continue to keep the egg in by contracting your muscles whenever you feel it's moving downward. It is helpful to wear underwear while standing up as the egg may slip easily and break if it hits a hard floor. Do not be discouraged if you find it difficult to keep the egg in! Continue to practice instead while laying down until you are ready to practice while upright.

Exercise 6: Incorporating Squats - Beginner

This exercise should be done without the jade egg as part of a complete practice. Squatting is one of the most beneficial movements you can practice regularly for optimal pelvic floor health.

We finish with squatting because a squat is an effective way to lengthen the pelvic floor muscles. The strength of your glutes directly influences proper pc muscle function. When you have weak glutes, other muscle groups have to compensate which can cause tightness in some areas and weakness in others.  Squats help support a supple trampoline like quality that can help tense pelvic floor muscles relax. Many women have muscles in their pelvic floor which are too tense, and some muscles that are underdeveloped. The squat is a natural position for lengthening muscles that can be tense.

With your feet hip wide apart and the insides of your feet parallel to each other slowly lower down into a squat while keeping your back straight. Stay in a squat for 15 seconds then slowly bring yourself back to standing. You may repeat and continue another 10 - 15 squats.

Exercise 5: Hip circles with the Egg - Advanced

Stand with feet hip width apart, insides of feet parallel to each other. With the egg inside of you, slowly start moving your hips in a circular motion clockwise. Slowly increase the size of your circles from small to larger circles, and then back again to small circles.

Change the direction of your hip circles to counter clockwise and follow the same movement of increasing small to larger hip circles and then decreasing them back to small, and finally standing still. Take your time with this exercise and really feel your body as it moves. See if you can feel where the egg is inside of you, and notice any sensations. This awareness helps increase your mind body connection.

This exercise activates the pelvis in a way we don’t commonly move. It energizes the blood and improves circulation and flexibility.

Finishing Exercise: Laying the Egg

Bring your body into a proper squat, as explained in exercise 5. Push down on the egg with your pc muscles as you would if you had a bowel movement. The egg will slowly come down the vaginal canal, and out, it may take a few pushes to learn how to do this.

This is also an excellent exercise and birth prep for those who want to learn how to push properly before they give birth.

Meditation 1:

The Purpose of this meditation is to help you connect with your creative energy in the pelvic bowl. The pelvic bowl is a term coined by Tami Lynn Kent who wrote The Wild Feminine, which references the actual shape of our bodies as opposed to the 2-dimensional idea of it just being a floor. Using the egg during this meditation serves as a focal point, and can help feel subtle inner sensations.

Find a comfortable private space to lay down, make sure that you have enough time to sink deeply into the meditation undisturbed.

Warm up your body through breast massage and self-touch to ready yourself for the egg. Use the embracing egg exercise to insert your egg in a gentle and receptive way.

Once the egg is inside of you, close your eyes and take a moment to take a few deep breaths and become aware of your body. Focus on your feet, feel their energy. Focus on your legs, your thighs, your hips, your belly. Part by part, notice how your entire body feels when you bring your attention to the energy of each place. Notice the difference in how each of these places in your body feels and the sensations that arise.

Once you have taken some time feeling yourself in your body and your energy, bring your focus to your vagina and your pelvic center. With your mind’s eye imagine a gentle pink light inside of your pelvic bowl. Just by bringing your awareness there, you may start to feel a tingling sensation, a gathering of energy. Focus on this energy right where the egg is, use the egg as a way to channel and concentrate this energy into one place.

Now concentrate on growing this pink light and as it becomes stronger and brighter take note if any places feel dark, shadowed, or blocked inside of your pelvis or vagina. Notice your emotions, what do you feel as you connect to this part of yourself? What emotions arise? If there are places that feel blocked bring your attention and focus the growing ball of pink light in that space until it transforms.

Once the ball of light is strong enough and you can feel your body buzzing with this energy, give yourself permission to release this creative energy all through your vagina and pelvic region. Allow your body to accept and use this energy for your inner most creative desires. Imagine this pink, bright ball of energy slowly melting into you and feeding your pelvic center with energy and inspiration.

Once you can see in your mind’s eye that the pink light is spread throughout your entire pelvic region, ask your heart to send you an image of a deep creative desire or passion, or something that you want to focus on that may be subconscious or undeveloped. This image is something that wants your attention, and as you take the time to work on this idea or inspiration, it will continue to increase your creative energy which is stored in your pelvic bowl. The more you focus on this energy and say yes to your inner creative desires, the more inspired and energized you will feel. Say yes to this idea, and commit yourself to spend time on this.

Take a few more deep breaths, and see if any more insights or sensations will come. When you feel relaxed and complete, you may simply pull the egg out with the string or do the squatting exercise to remove it. Use the egg as a reminder, seed, a symbol to keep nourishing your creative insights. When you practice with your egg or do this meditation, remember the egg can be a reminder of your commitment to love yourself and to pursuing your own unique and inspired path.

Self-Pleasuring:

Self-pleasuring is an amazing way to incorporate connecting deeply with your innate sensual and sexual energy during your jade egg practice. We recommend not focusing on orgasm as an end goal, instead, take the time to explore different sensations.

As you learn, your body and more about what kind of stimulation it responds to internally and externally, the easier it is for you to be able to communicate your needs within partnered sexual experiences.

Self-pleasuring is a potent tool to see and transform our inner dialogues around sex and sexuality. Exploring your own erotic and sensual nature without a partner means you can really focus on you.

We are often taught to prioritize our partners during sexual experiences. During self-pleasuring, YOU are the focus and learning and loving your body, and your innate sensual nature is the purpose.

It can be very empowering, and sometimes a very emotional experience. So bring a box of tissues and allow yourself to GO THERE.

Circulating your Sexual Energy

Part of the original Jade Egg practice in the Taoist tradition incorporates circulating the energy created during your jade egg practice from your pelvic region throughout your whole body. This practice is called the Microcosmic Orbit. The purpose of the microcosmic orbit is to move the sexual energy you built up doing your practice and circulate it through your whole body. When you do this, the energy becomes available to your whole body to use for healing, balancing, and energizing your entire self.

Sit down with your eyes closed and touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

Focus your attention on your perenium (the space between your vagina and your anus) and squeeze your pc muscles including your anus 3 times. Inhale and imagine as you squeeze that you are sipping the energy from your pelvic region slowly up your spine. Try to really feel the physical sensation of the energy moving up your back. Continue with your inhale moving the energy up your neck, and up to the crown of your head.

As you exhale, start moving the energy downward through your front channel, across the front of your face and down to your neck and all the way to just below your belly button. This is known as your dan tien, an important point for the flow of your chi, or vital energy. Let the energy you have move from your pelvis and rest here for a moment and place your hand here.

Continue on your inhale, moving the energy down from your dan tien to the base of your pelvic and back up your spine. Continue doing the microcosmic orbit for 8 cycles to circulate the energy properly.

Body Movements - increase pelvic energy and awaken sensation

Any form of movement you can incorporate into your practice will move the egg inside you in subtle ways that it will wake up nerve endings inside your vagina, increasing your sensitivity to lighter stimulation. This movement can be dancing, yoga, walking, swaying your hips, or just wandering around during your morning drinking of your tea. We recommend only exploring this if you are comfortable standing up with the egg in without the need to clench your PC muscles. If you need to stay clenched to keep the egg in, continue your practice laying down. Over using your PC muscles can create tension.

Retrieval of the Egg

After the practice, remove the egg by relaxing your PC muscles and gently pulling on the string. If the egg is not threaded, bear down and squeeze the muscles you would if you had a bowel movement. This should expel the egg. You may also use your fingers to retrieve the egg. After each use, discard the string and rinse the egg thoroughly with warm water. Dry, wrap in a clean, lint free cloth, and store in the provided pouch.
